Here at Nautical Farms, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We love finding and exploring the reciprocal relationships that can exist within our Nautical Farms ecosystem. For us, this synergistic relationship starts with seaweed, and regenerative aquaculture, also known as ocean farming, or polyculture farming. We believe that seaweed and regenerative aquaculture is one of the best ways to build a sustainable future for our planet and fellow humans.

Polyculture farming or regenerative agriculture (in our case aquaculture) is simply the practice of growing multiple crops simultaneously or in rotation with the goal being to improve the health of the environment by working in harmony with nature, rather than against it. By growing several species like sugar kelp, alaria, skinny kelp and mussels, our farm has enhanced nutrient utilization but also takes up less space and increases biodiversity. 

Farming just one type of seaweed or shellfish in the ocean has wonderful benefits including zero freshwater input, as well as zero dry land and fertilizer utilization, but polyculture systems take it a step further. They have better nutrient utilization as different species provide and use different nutrients to grow. They also take up less space as multiple things are growing alongside each other increasing biodiversity.

Kelp is a highly sustainable crop due to its ability to grow rapidly without the need for land, freshwater, or fertilizers. Sea kelps grow in the ocean, where they can be farmed in coastal areas, making them an excellent alternative to traditional land-based agriculture. Seaweed farming can also have a positive impact on the marine ecosystem by providing a habitat for fish and other marine animals, improving water quality, and reducing the risk of harmful algal blooms. Unlike traditional crops, seaweed does not require any pesticides or herbicides, making it an environmentally friendly option. The ability to cultivate seaweed without degrading the environment or depleting natural resources makes it a highly sustainable crop that can help meet the growing demand for food and other products in a way that is both environmentally and economically viable.

We have a use for every single blade of seaweed that we grow - whether it becomes a product we sell, or it goes to fertilize the fields of local farms who then provide even more great products that support our health and wellbeing. Our products are made with our organic ocean grown kelp. All other ingredients or materials that we source are first vetted through the lens of environmental sustainability ensuring they are plastic free. Next, we look to source ingredients and materials as locally as possible. At minimum, all of our ingredients and materials are sourced from the US.

All of our packaging is plastic free, or compostable. Many of our products are thoughtfully designed and packaged in beautiful, reusable, forever containers, meant for you to love and enjoy for years to come in whichever way you choose once the product is gone. Some of our packaging materials can be planted and will sprout wildflowers which in turn support bees. We believe that by working together and taking meaningful action, we can create a world that is free from plastic waste and full of sustainable, environmentally friendly alternatives.
